Kazuki Umezawa

Umezawa’s work is based upon a fine art tradition, building collages and miniatures by appropriating images seen in Japanese anime and TV games. However, given the contemporary art context in Japan for using imagery of this kind he does not do this without some hesitation. The use of so called anime/manga imagery to express a personal vision requires a level headed understanding of how alien that world is to the real world. Umezawa perceives the context of his surroundings with complexity; ‘The world in the monitor exists in another dimension to the real world in which we live and has a strong attraction for some people, yet we cannot touch or live within it. That is why I have chosen this form of expression, hoping that by doing so I can be closer to that world.’ This offers potential for artistic expression, a means by which understanding of ‘truth, virtue and beauty’ can be pursued through imitating nature, a perhaps universal and futile aspiration in seeking to achieve what will always remain an ideal that is unattainable.

梅沢かずきは、芸術という伝統のうえに、日本のアニメーションやテレビゲームに登場するようなある種のイメージを流用することで細密画やコラージュ作品を制作する。現在の日本においても微妙な問題であるこの行為を、梅沢はなんの躊躇もなくおこなっているのではない。自分を表現するために他者のいうアニメ／マンガ的イメージを用いるということは、ひどく冷徹に、現実とその世界が異質であることを理解していなければならない。梅沢はもっと複雑に自分の置かれた状況をとらえている。「我々が生きる現実の世界と別次元にあるモニターの中の世界は一部の人々にとって強烈に魅力的ですが、それ故に触れたり一緒に生きたりする事ができません。ですから私は描く事でその世界に近づけるのではないかと希望を抱いてこの表現をしています。」この言葉は人が自然を模倣することによって真善美に近づこうとした芸術的行為の一種の変形であるともいえるかもしれない。それはつまり、決して辿り着くことのできない理想を、満たされることのない飢餓と虚無とともになぞるしかない、ある意味人間の普遍的行為である。
