Ushio Sekiguchi

It is in the subtlety of change that we begin to understand Sekiguchi’s work. He is a printmaker at a time when this might be considered an ‘out of date’ media. Yet, by addressing the technical challenges the print making process presents he seeks to create images of beauty through variation. Inherent differences between print and painting allow for reproduction of the original, albeit with nuances introduced by changes of temperature and moisture, the condition of the ink and others factors. His is not a photo-reprographic process, nor one that seeks to mass produce imagery like a poster. Rather, Sekiguchi attempts to formulate a creative process with variation at its core, one plate yielding different images as if sensing the season’s changing, capturing a quintessential Japanese sensibility in evoking the subtleties of change over time.

関口潮は、版画独自の表現方法を追求することによって、どこまで美しい変化を生み出すことができるのかに挑戦している。つまりそれは、写真発明以後、完璧なコピー技術を手に入れるまでに至った現代において、複製可能という絵画とは異なるシステムにおいて発展した製版技術が、今何を表現するものになりえるかということである。そして今、関口が制作の足場としているものが、ひとつのオリジナルを完璧にコピーできないという製版画面特有の微細な差異への視点である。そもそもにおいて製版は、ひとつの版より刷り出されるイメージ自体が、湿度や温度、インクの状態や手を加えるものの状況によって、常に異なるものとしての姿を現す。近代のポスターや挿絵のように、言語に付随するイメージとして製版画面が重要であった時代をかけ離れ、芸術作品としての現代の版画には、その度重なる刷りごとの変化が、作品の線引きにおいて決定的な要素となる。現代の時代性もそうだが、現在の一瞬も捕らえることができないという、「遅れたメディア」としての版画の認識とその枷をもって、関口はひとつのオリジナルからすべてが異なるイメージ、その総体としての差異の体系を作り出そうとしている。大きな枠としての季節の移ろいを、小さなニュアンスの変化から感じとることのできた日本人独自の精神性が、関口の作品には現れている。
